We received the following note from Dr. Bert Lies, an orthopedic surgeon who is also a friend of POM's owners:
Dear POM,
In Sept. of 1996 I developed an osteomyelitis of the right Maxilla & Mandible, requiring multiple surgeries through 1998 because of the infections & Neuralgia inducing cavitational bone osteonecrosis (NICOS Lesions).
I stopped practicing medicine in Nov. of 1996, because of these problems. My blood counts began to change , with a slowly rising White Blood Cell(WBC) count, with elevated Lymphocytes . Between 2002 & 2004 my White blood cell count doubled & the lymphocyte count was as high as 76% of all White blood cells. Multiple tests were done with Flow Cytometry analysis confirming CD 38 & ZAP-70 negative ,CLL (Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia )----a gene mutation in the immunoglobulin heavy chain , causing the "abnormal " production of Lymphocytes.
