We received the following note from Dr. Bert Lies, an orthopedic surgeon who is also a friend of POM's owners:
Dear POM,
In Sept. of 1996 I developed an osteomyelitis of the right Maxilla & Mandible, requiring multiple surgeries through 1998 because of the infections & Neuralgia inducing cavitational bone osteonecrosis (NICOS Lesions).
I stopped practicing medicine in Nov. of 1996, because of these problems. My blood counts began to change , with a slowly rising White Blood Cell(WBC) count, with elevated Lymphocytes . Between 2002 & 2004 my White blood cell count doubled & the lymphocyte count was as high as 76% of all White blood cells. Multiple tests were done with Flow Cytometry analysis confirming CD 38 & ZAP-70 negative ,CLL (Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia )----a gene mutation in the immunoglobulin heavy chain , causing the "abnormal " production of Lymphocytes.
I began evaluations at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey with Roger Strair , M.D. , Ph.D.----Professor of Medicine . Multiple studies including C.T & PET/CT scans , have been done. By 2006 & 2007 the WBC had reached a high of 34,300 with up to 80% abnormal Lymphocytes. No chemotherapy was suggested . In 2007 I began drinking 3 tablespoons of POM ( 100% Pomegranate juice concentrate ) ---graciously sent to me by Lynda's team at POM Wonderful!
Since that time I have increased my exercise regimen , had normal follow-up exams , and my WBC count has decreased from a high of 34,300 to 23,900 ( 8/19/09). A decrease of 10,400-----some 30 %. My physicians find no spread of the disease to the liver, spleen , or lymph nodes. No medical treatment has been suggested. I attribute my improvement-----no further jaw infections & no worsening/improvement of the CLL to the antioxidant power of Pomegranate Concentrate. As I test PSA annually, from a high of 5.63 , the current PSA has dropped to a low of 3.30. All other tests , including liver & kidney function tests are normal.
Thank-you,
Bert
