One of the things I love about Los Angeles, and this topic hardly gets the attention or respect it deserves from people who do not live here, is the area's vast array of truly excellent architecture. The myth about the city, and I freely concede some stereotypes (this one included) contain a kernel of truth, is that Los Angeles is not a place known for memorable buildings or striking design. Now, what does this observation have to do with, say, POM Wonderful? Everything. Well before I became a consumer of the brand, I really admired the way each product started its own trend in packaging; the bottles clearly stood out, establishing a visual (and thus an emotional) connection with shoppers. To a degree, that effort is an investment by the company in itself and a sign of respect. If nothing else, the company says: We care a great deal about art, the sort of design that is both functional and stylish. Which brings me to the topic of streamline moderne, one of my favorite examples of the Art Deco movement.
Not far from where I live, in nearby Hollywood, is an incredible example of moderne design: the High Tower apartments, a popular film location for movies like "Dead Again" and "The Long Goodbye". The High Tower offers some breathtaking views of Hollywood. If you're in town, climb to the top . . . and make a toast to POM and good health. Cheers
